Missing Socks (And What They Might Be Trying to Tell Me)

I have no idea where these ideas come from. But today, standing in my laundry room - just me, a basket of clean clothes, and a growing sense of confusion - I had to ask the question.

Where does the mate to my socks disappear to? Not every load. Not all the time. But just enough to make me wonder where on earth they’re going. And - I live alone.

“It was just a sock, but it made me stop.”

Let’s Break This Down

My place isn’t magazine-perfect, but it’s good. It’s organized, clean, and very livable. There aren’t piles of clutter or random chaos hiding in corners. And yet…

Socks go into the wash - and every now and then, one doesn’t come out.

At first, I brushed it off. Just one sock here and one sock there. But after a while, you start to notice. Not enough to panic, but enough to pause and think: Where did that sock go?

The Usual Suspects (Have Been Cleared)

When my kids were little, it used to happen to their socks, but that was easy. I blamed them. Done. But now! They don’t live here. They’re not quietly sneaking in to take one sock at a time (at least I don’t think they are), so that theory is out.

The Sheet Theory

A friend told me to check the corners of my sheets - apparently things get stuck there when you fold them up and put them away. Fair enough. So I checked. And yes, I did find a pair of underwear tangled up in a fitted sheet corner, which was a bit of a surprise. But socks? Still missing in action.

The Rhine River Theory (This One Might Be It)

Now this is where it gets interesting. On a cruise last August along the Rhine River, I remember our tour guide telling us about a small village in Germany called Rühstädt, known as Europe’s Stork Village. And when I say storks, nests are everywhere - rooftops, nests on chimneys, and some of them used year after year, growning bigger each season.

These aren’t small, tidy nests either. They’re big and a little messy, built over time using whatever the storks can find - twigs, grass, bits of fabric, and according to the story? Socks. Yes socks and lots ot them.

Now, I don’t know if that’s the actual truth, but I don't have much to go on at this point, so I’ve decided to accept it as fact. I loved that little town along the Rhine - and I’m starting to think my socks did too.

My Current Strategy

At this point, I’ve adapted. Costco socks. Bulk packs. White, pink, green the choices are many. If one disappears, it’s not a big deal. But those special socks? The nice ones, the ones that go with a specific outfit? Gone. Apparently off living their best life in Germany.

“It wasn’t really about the sock.”

But Here’s What Hit Me Today

Standing there, holding one lonely sock, I started thinking about how strange it is that something can just disappear without you noticing right away. And it made me wonder…

What else in life does that?

  • Time?

  • Energy?

  • Opportunities?

  • Even parts of ourselves?

Sometimes things slip away without warning or explanation. And sometimes just like the socks - they don’t come back. But, we learn to move on anyway.

Maybe It’s Not About the Socks

Maybe it’s about paying attention. Maybe it’s about letting go of needing everything to match perfectly. Or maybe it’s just about being able to laugh a little when things don’t make sense. Because honestly, if I can teach disaster preparedness, train ESS teams, and help communities navigate chaos - you would think I could figure out what’s happening in my own laundry room.

And yet—here we are.

“Not everything is meant to stay matched.”

Final Thought

So for now, I’ll keep buying Costco socks, enjoy the mystery, and assume that somewhere out there, there’s a stork nest that’s just a little more comfortable because of me and my missing sock.

And really…I’m okay with that. Still - I think another trip along the Rhine, just to be sure might be the move yet.
