Seven Bags Lighter: Making Room for My New Life

\

sorting my closet - deciding what I need

I live in a one-bedroom apartment. I don’t have a lot of extra space, and I’ve always felt I did a pretty good job keeping things to a minimum. I’m not someone who holds on to clothes from ten years ago - but I did still have my work clothes. And now that I’m moving into a new phase of my life, all I can say is this: they’re no longer needed.

When your space is small, clutter can ruin everything.

My closet was overflowing, and as I worked through the process, I decided to carry it into other parts of my apartment. My office was packed with papers I “might need someday,” and suddenly everything felt more crowded than it should.

This weekend, I finally asked myself one simple question: Does this still belong in my life - Does this still belong to my new life - my new chapter?

Seven bags later - garbage and Goodwill - I felt lighter, clearer, and genuinely excited. This wasn’t about organizing. It was about choosing my next chapter.

“This wasn’t about organizing. It was about choosing my next chapter.”

Somewhere along the way, I read a quote that said something like remove the items that don’t belong in this phase of life. I really wish I’d saved it - because that’s exactly what this was.

1. When Your Closet Tells the Truth

I had nine blazers. Nine!

That made sense when I worked in an office every day. It doesn’t anymore.

I present. I teach. I live in dark jeans, a great jacket, and a nice top. Two or three blazers are more than enough for the life I’m living now. Letting the rest go wasn’t loss - it was alignment.

Lesson Learned:
Your wardrobe should support your current life, not your former one.

2. Once You Start Letting Go, Momentum Takes Over

At first, it was practical. Then it became freeing.

Four vases became two. Extra “just in case” items disappeared. Once I got on a roll, there was no stopping. Every decision built confidence. Every cleared shelf felt like reclaiming space — not just physically, but mentally.

“Does this still belong in my life?”

Lesson Learned:
Clarity creates momentum. Momentum creates confidence.

3. The Office Clean-Out Was the Real Breakthrough

My office was the hardest part.

I save everything - you know the thought that comes in: what if I need it? Every note. Every handout. Every piece of paper tied to a project, a contract, or a memory. And then I didn’t.

I shredded. I recycled. I cleared it all. What stayed was intentional. What left was weight I didn’t realize I was carrying.

Lesson Learned:
Letting go of paper is often about letting go of old versions of ourselves.

4. This Wasn’t Cleaning - This was Making It Real

For over a year, I’ve been building Jackie Doing Jackie. Writing. Reflecting. Reimagining what life looks like now. This weekend made it real.

The physical act of clearing my space brought everything together. My home finally matches the life I’ve been consciously creating. And that - it changes everything.

Lesson Learned:
When your environment matches your intentions, progress feels natural.

Final Note.............

I’m excited for my new life — not someday, but now.

Seven bags lighter, with room to breathe, think, and move forward. This wasn’t about having less. It was about making space for what actually fits.
